The invention aims at improving the operational safety of lighting systems for polarized light. For that purpose, an indesirable direction of polarisation is rotated by deflecting means having a rough surface, thus allowing so-called quarter-wave plates to be dispensed with. In addition, the operational safety is increased thanks to the use of two independant light sources provided with their own focussing means. The light sources are further controlled by controlling means, thus reducing the load applied to the individual light sources. The invention is particularly useful for lighting liquid crystal light valves that form part of a projection system.
