The invention relates to a front cantilever which is pivotably arranged on the main bar of a self-advancing support assembly and, for the purpose of immediate support of the exposed roof, is provided with a slide bar mounted in or on it. The slide bar can be extended in the direction of the coal face by means of a thrust cylinder. In this known extendable front cantilever, a cover element (1) is arranged according to the invention above the slide bar (4) in order to prevent the ingress of dust and fines into the sliding surfaces between the front cantilever and the slide bar. The cover element (1) is fastened with one end (7) to the front cantilever (3) and is deflected downwards with the other end at the coal face-side end (6) of the slide bar so that it covers the extended slide bar in a protective manner. To compensate for the vertical difference between the front cantilever and the slide bar and to bridge bearing gaps, supporting strips (2) can also be arranged under the cover element, which can be formed from a flexible material. <IMAGE>
