Method of producing metal printing sheets which can be stored as long as required without losing their printability. In the method, conventionally anodized and rinsed metal sheets made of aluminium or aluminium alloys are subjected to a final treatment with ultrasound, preferably having a frequency of 20 to 60 kHz for at least two minutes, or to a final treatment with dilute nitric acid, preferably after being immersed for about 5 minutes in 5 % by weight nitric acid. Said metal sheets are then dried and welded into a film which is impermeable to water vapour together with a drying agent such as silica gel. If the rinsing with dilute nitric acid is combined with a subsequent ultrasonic treatment, the ultrasonic treatment can be limited to approximately 0.5 minutes.
