The tubes of a heat exchanger (2), which are arranged behind one another in a plurality of rows, are flowed through by condensing steam and flowed over transversely by a heat exchanging medium. In order to avoid a backflow and condensate build up in tubes of the rows first flowed over, said tubes are constructed as smooth tubes (3). For the other tubes, use is made of finned tubes (4, 5), it being possible for the finned tubes (4) adjacent to the smooth tubes (3) to have a smaller surface than the end tubes (5) located further away. <IMAGE>
