<p>A high strength tire and wheel assembly (10) having a closed torus tire (14) mounted on a rim assembly (12). The tire (14) has shoulder portions (32, 32 min ) adjacent the boundaries of tire (14) and rim assembly (12) contact. The rim assembly (12) includes elastomeric elements (44, 44 min ) positioned intermediate the shoulder portions (32, 32 min ) and a metallic rim portion (43). The tire and wheel assembly (10) also includes strengthening elements (50) extending circumferentially through the shoulder portions (32, 32 min ). A flange portion (48) on said rim assembly (12) serves to contain an outer edge (45) of each elastomeric element (44, 44 min ). The high strength tire and wheel assembly (10) runs cooler in high load situations than do existing tire and wheel assemblies.</p> |
