SURFACE-MODIFIED SELF-PASSIVATING INTRAOCULAR LENSES

Intraocular lenses are coated with C12-C36 alkyl groups that render the surface of the intraocular lens less prone to causing inflammation after implantation of the intraocular lens. The alkyl groups may be coated on the IOL by a centrifugal casting method, a solution deposition method (e.g., a covalent attachment method), or a plasma deposition method that minimizes fragmentation of the alkyl groups. A preferred IOL includes an optic (2) and haptics (4). The optics (2) and haptics (4) of the present invention may be made of any material that is standard in the art of IOLs, or others developed in the future for this purpose. It is also possible to employ IOLs that do not have haptics (4), and which are supported in the eye by any suitable means. When a haptic (4) is present, either or both of the optic (2) and the haptic(s) (4) may be coated by alkyl groups.
