A toner container (80) has three chambers (92, 94, 96) for holding three different color toners. The container is receivable by a receiving structure having a pair of opposing slots (75, 76) for receiving flanges (85, 86) on the base of the toner container. The receiving mechanism is part of a development device (6) which includes a movable carriage (50) for moving a plurality of development units (16, 17, 18, 19) into alignment with a development position (40). A portion, for example, an applicator (29) of each development unit is movable with respect to the rest of the unit into toning relation with an image member (2) at the development position.
