This washing machine is provided with an electrochemical cell (4) fitted with a reservoir of brine (9) provided with a metering piston (16a, 16b) actuated by an electromagnet (21) and connected via a solenoid valve (14) controlling a duct (3) for connecting to a water supply duct (1). The inlet opening of this connection duct into the cell (4) is controlled by a float valve (11). The electrovalve is a two-way electrovalve (14, 14a) and simultaneously controls the outlet duct (13) which opens out into the washing drum of the washing machine. The power supply to the cell (4) is controlled by the programme selector (8) of the machine. <IMAGE>
