PURPOSE:To prevent overcooling of a suspended cylinder and to maintain a temperature around its combustion chamber as uniformly as possible, by either suspending or restricting supply of engine cooling water to the suspended cylinder, in a suspended condition of the suspended cylinder. CONSTITUTION:At the time of low load operation, fuel injection valves attached to suspended cylinders 2 and 3 are made nonoperative, and operation of the suspended cylinders 2 and 3 are stopped. In this instance, the suspended cylinders 2 and 3 prevented from overcooling by cooling water as a control valve 23 is closed by a number of cylinder control detector 24, and the cooling water from a water pump 20 is flowed only to a second cooling water passage 17 and not to a first cooling water passage 16. On the other hand, at the time of conventional operation wherein number of cylinder control is not carried out, the control valve 23 is opened, the cooling water is supplied to each of cylinders 1- 4 through the first and the second cooling water passages 16 and 17, and an engine is cooled effectively without overheating. |
