PURPOSE:To provide a mold additive for continuous casting which eliminates dusting during addition, is slow to dissolve and reduces the frequencies for charging by kneading main components and a flux by the use of a binder, molding the mixture to a shape covering the entire surface of the molten metal in a mold and specifying the bulk specific density thereof. CONSTITUTION:>=1 Kind of SiO2, CaO, Al2O3 and C as main components and an oxide or fluoride of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals as a flux and a binder are kneaded, and the mixture is molded to the shape covering the entire surface of the molten metal in a mold. The bulk specific density thereof is set at about 0.4-2.0g/cm<3> and the thickness at 5-40mm.. A hole 4 for insertion of an immersion nozzle 3 is provided in the central part of such mold additive 1. When this additive 1 is loaded onto the surface of the molten metal 5 of the mold 2, it changes as if to assume strata of a sintered layer 1A, a slightly reacted layer 1B and an unreacted layer 1C successively upward from the lower part in contact with a slag layer 6, and dissolves successively from the lower part. |
