PURPOSE: To stabilize a 3-isothiazolone compound against chemical decomposition by incorporating an effective amount of an alkene in the above compound useful as a biocidal compound. CONSTITUTION: A 3-isothiazolone compound of the formula (R and R<1> are each H, a halogen, alkyl, or joined together into a 5- or 6-membered condensed aromatic carbocycle; Y is H, an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, etc.) (esp. pref. 5-chloro-2-methyl-3-isothiazolone, 2-methyl-3-isothiazolone, etc.) is incorporated with an alkene (esp. pref. norbornene, cyclohexene, etc.) in the weight ratio of pref. about (1:1) to (5:1) or so, thus stabilizing the 3-isothiazolone compound against chemical decomposition. The 3-isothiazolone compound may be incorporated with a solvent such as isopropanol, 2-butanol or dipropylene glycol in addition to the alkene. The resultant composition is capable of suppressing the growth of bacteria, fungi or algae even when an aqueous medium, cosmetic formulation, fabric, leather, paper, wood, etc., is contaminated with these microorganisms. |
