Input registers (RA,RB,RC) receive a measured value from a detector. A hold circuit prevents the value from changing while it is being read by a control circuit (CC). The registers are read through a multiplexer (CC) to a word selector (SM) when triggered by a matching unit (CA). The word selector provides a sequence of digital signals representing the selected word from those recorded. This word passes via a range selector register (RR) to a range comparator (CR) which compares the range of the word selected with the number of words counted by a word counter (CM). The comparator controls the cassette motor (MT) speed at high speed if the word is outside the range or at low speed if it is within range. The matching unit then allows the selected word to be transmitted on the telephone line (LT). The data record recorded can represent measured physical magnitudes relating to e.g. weather conditions.
