A process for producing pitch is characterised in that a residue obtained by cracking of a crude oil fraction is subjected to two successive treatments of thermal ageing, the first treatment of thermal ageing being carried out in a first reactor at a pressure above atmospheric pressure but below 14.7 bar (15 kg/cm<2>) and while maintaining a temperature difference between the hot lower part and the cooler upper part of the first reactor, and the second treatment of thermal ageing being carried out in a second reactor at a pressure not above atmospheric pressure with injection of steam in a quantity of 0.3 to 3 volumes of water, relative to the volume of the pitch produced, into the second reactor beneath the gas/liquid interface. The pitch obtained by means of the process is suitable for use in the manufacture of carbon fibres.
