Ingot mould having a heat-insulating protective layer

The ingot mould has a heat-insulating protective layer of sub-micron metal oxide particles on its working surface. The coating can be carried out by spraying the ingot mould working surface heated to at least 60 DEG with an aqueous sol of a metal oxide. The use of sub-micron metal oxide particles makes possible the build-up of protective layers having a very small thickness and consequently very low heat conductivity. The coating can moreover be applied and also removed again in a cost-effective manner.
