The invention has the object of significantly reducing the risk of collision in ground transportation by continuously determining the distance to the other moving vehicles and their speed vectors. As a result, prompt warnings of risks of collisions can be given in the vehicle. The system detects a possible risk of collision by means of a computer from the speed vector of the vehicle and the optically measured movements of other vehicles. The optical measuring process constitutes a sequential viewing on the basis of an observation of light intensities in two batteries by tubes which are arranged in a star shape and have a narrow aperture. The time-dependent intensity distributions are evaluated by means of a computer and permit the necessary speed and distance determinations to be made.
