Transformed living cells (human, animal or plant, other than macrophages) contg. in their cytoplasm at least one particle of, pref. activated, latex are new. Pref. the cells contain 1-800 (esp. 60-200) particles which have particle size 0.02-5 microns and are made of homo- or co-polymers contg. residues of vinyl aromatic, ethylenic (opt. functionalised), diacid or alkanoic ester monomers. USE/ADVANTAGE - The cells can be grown in culture to produce active materials, esp. antibodies (from hybridomas) but also e.g. hormones, enzyme. Latex particles can be incorporated into a wide range of cells without adverse effect on their biological processes. Unlike known cells having latex particles on the surface, the new cells do not require preliminary activation of the particles and can be reused. When the particles contain a magnetic filler, the cells are easily sepd. from the conditioned medium.
