The invention relates to a device for controlling the speed of a diesel internal combustion engine, with a pressure medium-actuated swivel lever, which is connected to the control shaft of the speed governor, a pressure medium-actuatable rocker lever being pivoted on the swivel lever and each lever being connected to the piston rod of a pressure medium-controlled cylinder, which cylinders can be ventilated and vented by way of valves, the valve assigned to the cylinder for full load operation being a solenoid valve, which is ventilated and vented by energising or de-energising the cylinder. In order to ensure, when this control device is used in street cleaning machines, that the full load operation of the diesel internal combustion engine and hence of the appliances connected to it, such as the fan and the sweeping units, is maintained only as long as road conditions dictate, it is proposed according to the invention to connect the solenoid valve to a relay which automatically de-energises the solenoid valve once a preselectable period of time has elapsed. In this, the period of time on the relay is manually adjustable. The relay can be switched on by way of a pushbutton.
