In summary, it can be said that the invention with the designation "rowing mechanism" relates to oars and sculls with a blade movably attached to the shaft. The blade is held in the favourable right-angled position relative to the longitudinal axis of the boat by a parallel linkage. The invention enables both forward and backward thrust forces to be transmitted to shaft and blade by a rotatably mounted handle as well as torque to be transmitted by universal joint to the blade, pivotably mounted around the shaft end about its longitudinal axis, even over an angle between shaft and blade. Here, the shaft is carried in a rowlock which permits both the shaft movement required for rowing and the force transmission to the boat and can also absorb the thrust forces coming from the boat and acting axially to the shaft in the direction of the handle. In this arrangement, the bearing points of the handle are configured in such a way that reliable guidance of the blade during the stroke is possible.
