Polariser for electromagnetic waves

The polariser (2) consists of a plurality of thin metal plates (1), which are parallel to one another in the propagation direction of the electromagnetic wave. The distance (A) between the metal plates is equal to or greater than half the operating wavelength. The width of the metal plates (B) is selected such that the phase shift between a component (Ep) of the electromagnetic wave parallel to the metal plates and a component (Es) of the electromagnetic wave at right angles to the metal plates is equal to 180 DEG or an odd integer multiple thereof, after passing through the polariser (2). The polariser is suitable for rotating the polarisation direction of a linearly polarised electromagnetic wave. <IMAGE>
