Light valve apparatus for optically addressing a plurality of picture elements (pixels) arranged in a linear pattern. Such apparatus comprises an areal (i.e. two dimensional) light valve array (20), a lens (30) for imaging such array at an intermediate image plane, and optical mapping means (40) for re-imaging the two dimensional image of the array as a predetermined linear pixel pattern. By using an areal (compared to linear) array of light valves, more efficient use is made of the relatively expensive light-modulating material from which such arrays are made, and uniform illumination of the array is facilitated. |
