PURPOSE:To reinforce a cation exchange membrane without affecting unfavorably the electrical characteristics, by incorporating an ethylene tetrafluoride polymer into a cation exchange resin forming a cation exchange membrane dividing a cathode and an anode. CONSTITUTION:The fibril ethylene tetrafluoride polymer is prepared by polymerizing ethylene tetrafluoride in a known manner, it is preferred that its surface area is 3-30m<2>/g, and its molecular weight is on the range of 2 millions or more. Preferably 0.2-25pts.wt. of the polymer are added to 100pts.wt. of the cation exchange resin, and the shearing force is applied to the mixture to obtain fibrils for the exchange membrane. The cation exchange membrane is a polymer having an ion exchange capacity of the ion exchange resin of 0.5-2.5 milliequivalents/g of dried resin and having carboxylic acid groups or sulfonic acid groups as ion exchange groups. |
