PURPOSE:To lower a bath voltage of electrolysis, by employing a porous electrode having a specified width as at least one of a set of a cathode and an anode, and firmly fixing this porous electrode to an ion exchange membrane placed between the cathode and the anode and having a specified layer. CONSTITUTION:At least one of a set of a cathode and an anode is replaced with a porous electrode, and an ion exchange membrane is placed between the cathode and the anode to perform electrolysis. The electrode width of the porous electrode is smaller than 5 times the thickness of the ion exchange membrane. Further a water and ion-permeable layer having an electrical resistance lower than that of the ion exchange membrane is formed on the ion exchange membrane surface, and the porous electrode is firmly sticked to this layer for performing electrolysis. Perfluorocarbon is used as a skeleton for the ion exchange membrane, and the layer used therefor is produced by molding, for example, a copolymer of CF2=CF2 with a compound of the formula into a film, hydrolyzing it, treating it with methanol, and immersing it in water. |
