PURPOSE: To detect an intermediate failure of an engine speed sensor and to continue control on the safety side. CONSTITUTION: Engine speed N is detected by a first engine speed sensor 31 on the engine 1 side and engine speed N2 is detected by a second engine speed sensor 33 on the fuel injection pump 4 side. Engine speed sensors, which judged as being abnormal subject to the engine speed ratio N2/N1 being out of a specified range, are regarded as being abnormal when it detects the engine speed on the lower side and normal when it detects the engine speed on the higher side. Engine speed detected by the engine speed sensor regarded as being normal is used for fuel injection quantity control.
