A door stay device for the door of a vehicle comprises a channel-shaped housing 4 with a web 10 and walls 11 and 12 pivoted to a support 14 by a pin 13. A detent roller 3 is supported on the support 14 by a pin 18. A torsion bar spring 7 has arms 8 and 9 retained in the housing and an arm 6 which can be engaged by the roller 3 and is free to move in a slot 5 in one flange of the housing 12. The web of the housing is bolted to the door jamb 1. The support has feet 15 bolted to an edge 16 of the door. The pivot pin 13 passes through projecting portions of the housing walls as well as of the support and lies substantially in the plane of attachment of the feet 15 within a recess 17 in edge 16.
