The tool for a mechanical shovel comprises a rigid elongate body (1) which is cylindrical in shape. The diameter of the body is at least equal to that of the duct or cable which is to be laid beneath an existing obstacle (c). The free end (1') of the body is pointed whilst the other end carries a mounting (2) secured in place of a tooth on the leading edge of the shovel. The diameter of the hole (T) formed can be increased by placing a rigid ferrule (4) over the body of the tool.
