The rechargeable hand torch has a sealed enclosure (2) containing rechargeable batteries (4) supplying an electric lamp (10), also sealed in the enclosure, through a circuit (12,14) incorporating a switch (16) operated from outside the enclosure. Two contacts (18,20) are brought through the wall of the enclosure through sealed exits and are permanently available for connection into a battery charger (30). The recharging circuit includes a switch (26) which is operated from outside the enclosure by a magnet (28) mounted on the battery charger unit, so that the switch is closed when the torch is connected into the charger.
