To detect the respective actual position along the horizontal travelling or pivoting path, proximity switches which can be actuated in a non-contacting manner and are sensitive to iron are arranged in fixed positions at uniform distances apart. The proximity switches are actuated by one or more position transmitters attached to the horizontally movable travelling or pivoting frame of the hoisting apparatus. By means of an audio-frequency transmitter with a transmitter frequency corresponding to the number of proximity switches, the actuating signal is transmitted to an audio-frequency receiver with a corresponding number of receiver frequencies. An arrangement of light emitting diodes, corresponding to the number of possible positions and distributed over the surface, serve to indicate the position. The light emitting diodes are activated by the respectively balanced frequency ranges. In a shaft-sinking rig, the invention enables the position of the shaft grab relative to the passage openings for the bucket passage which are made in the sinking platform to be continuously indicated. Here, the proximity switches are attached in a fixed position opposite the pivotable boom on which the grab winch is located, while the position transmitters are arranged on the boom. By the actuation of the proximity switches on account of the respective pivoted position of the boom of the shaft grab, the respective pivoted position of the shaft grab with regard to the passage openings is indicated to the hoist operator by the illumination of the appropriate light emitting diodes on the position-indicator board, which is located on the control panel of the hoist control platform.
