An apparatus for packaging pallets (12) with stretch wrapping foil has a rotary apparatus (11) for the pallet (12) which is arranged on a base (13) and rotates about a vertical rotation axis. Parallel thereto a slide (16) can be moved up and down on a vertical column (15) by means of an electric motor, on which slide a foil roll (21) having a vertical rotation axis is mounted. The foil roll (21) is braked by a brake (25) which engages a brake disc (22) on the spool axle (20) and is actuated by an electric gear motor (28) via a toggle lever mechanism (33, 34). A sensor (42) senses the circumference of the foil roll and controls the braking and hence the tension of the foil via a control device (40), which contains a microprocessor. <IMAGE>
