A drive for the absorber rod (3) in a pebble-bed nuclear reactor, which with the aid of a motor (4) and a transmission (5) having two outputs can both be rotated via a rotating tube (6) and be moved up and down by means of a spindle drive (9, 10). The rotating tube has guides (7) on its inside for rollers (8) on which the absorber rod is mounted in a longitudinally displaceable fashion. In order to permit the rotating tube to be produced with integrally formed guides, it is divided into a number of strakes (61) connected to one another in a form-fitting fashion. A particular configuration of the end faces of the strakes is specified in order to facilitate the take-up of the torque, and to enable the rollers (8) to run unhindered by the joints between the individual strakes. <IMAGE>
