4-(2-Aminoethylthiomethyl)-5-methylimidazole, an intermediate for the preparation of cimetidine, is prepared by the reaction of a 4,5-dimethylimidazole in which one methyl group is substituted by a hydroxy or lower alkoxy group or a chlorine or bromine atom, with a substituted ethyleneimino compound that is an N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-alkylthiocarboxamide, an N-(2-mercaptoethyl)-alkylcarboxamide, or a 2-alkyl-2-thiazoline. |
