The invention relates to an internal combustion engine operated with gaseous fuel stored in the liquid state with a fuel vaporiser subjected to heat, from which fuel vapour is fed by way of a spring-loaded, diaphragm-controlled control valve to the cylinders by way of a gas mixer and by way of a throttle valve into the intake line. During the starting phase of an internal combustion engine the pressure of the fuel vapour in the fuel vaporiser is led by way of a solenoid reversing valve to the rear side of the diaphragm of the control valve, as a result of which more vaporised fuel reaches the gas mixer and condensation losses on cold walls in the intake system are compensated for. The reversing valve is connected parallel to the starter circuit. When the internal combustion engine is at operating temperature, a temperature switch opens, so that the reversing valve then remains closed and the control valve can only feed the normal quantity of vaporised fuel to the gas mixer.
