A work chair has a seat support (1), a seat (16) which is supported pivotably on the seat support (1) and is connected to a pivotable support (4) for the backrest, and a controllable gas spring (13) which is supported on the seat support (1) and engages via a crank mechanism (6) on the seat (16) and on the support (4) for the backrest. In order to obtain a stable construction with the possibility of adaptation to various body weights, the support (4) for the backrest is mounted so as to be pivotable on an axle (5) arranged in the seat support (1), the gas spring (13) engaging on the crank (7) of the crank mechanism (6) which is mounted in the seat support (1) and is of longitudinally adjustable construction. <IMAGE>
