An ingot mould has a hot-top positioned inside its upper part which comprises a plate of material capable of withstanding contact with molten metal poured into the mould. The plate is of less thickness than the mould wall thickness and is received in a recess in the inner wall of the mould top so that its surface is flush and aligned with the inner surface of the mould. The plate forms a closure wall which separates the interior of the recess from the interior of the mould. Used for casting Fe and steel ingots. Pipe formation in the ingot is limited, Owing to thermal expansion of the inner wall of the hot top during casting, the inner wall is moved off of the ingot, without any external manipulation so that a gap is formed which acts as a very efficient thermal insulation. This also reduces contamination of the ingot. The hot-top construction is simple and facilitates manipulation for maintenance and repair.
|
