A catalyst for use in a heterogeneous catalytic process for making chlorine dioxide from an acid and a metal chlorate solution comprises at least one platinum group metal oxide selected from iridium oxide, ruthenium oxide, rhodium oxide, platinum oxide and palladium oxide, preferably with at least one valve metal oxide, for instance, titanium oxide.
