The surface 12 of a solar cell is coated with an anti-reflection layer 14, which is then masked to expose areas corresponding to the desired electrode pattern. The exposed parts of the anti-reflection layer are removed by etching, the exposed surface of the cell is sensitised and an electrode pattern 18 of nickel is applied by electroless plating. The mask is then removed and the electrodes thickened (20) by solder dipping or electroplating.
