CUTTING MACHINE WITH EDGE SHARPENER

A sharpener for a rotary cutting wheel includes an abrasive wheel that rotates about an axis disposed in non- parallel relationship with the axis of rotation of the cutting wheel. The end face of the abrasive wheel rubs against one side of the cutting wheel and across the peripheral cutting edge with rotary motion so that a whetting motion is simulated. The abrasive wheel may be free wheeling and pressed into engagement with the cutting wheel so that driving forces on the sharpening wheel cause sharpening of the cutting edge to occur simultaneously with rotation of the cutting wheel in a cutting operation. Alternatively, the abrasive wheel is motor driven and moved in and out of contact with the cutting wheel for sharpening the cutting wheel independently of a cutting operation.
