PURPOSE:To improve the generation of disclination defects by sandwiching a nematic liquid crystal contg. optical active materials of which the ratio of thickness and pitch is kept in a specific range between substrates having electrodes. CONSTITUTION:In a liquid crystal display element wherein a liquid crystal consisting essentially of a nematic liquid crystal is sandwiched between substrates having two sheets of electrodes, optically active materials are added to the nematic liquid crystal so that when the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is defined as (d) and the pitch of the liquid crystal as (p), the d/p attains 0.15- 0.35. This liquid crystal is poor in orientation characteristic and is particularly high in its effect when the liquid crystal contg. much of the phenyl cyclohexane (PCH) being vulnerable to orientation defect is used. Since the defect owing to the disclination that occurs frequently when the liquid crystal contg. these PCH liquid crystals at >=50% is used is prevented, the effect is particularly high. |
