PURPOSE:To obtain hydrogen with low voltage and good efficiency by disposing a cation exchange membrane between an anode and a cathode, which is used for a water electrolyzing cell and is provided with porous layers having no electrode activity in the state wherein the surfaces of said membrane are not in tight contact with the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Porous electrodes 2, 2' are provided on respective both surfaces of picture framelike anode and cathode chamber frames 1, 1' consisting of, for example, hollow pipes, in a filter press type electrolytic cell. Porous layers 4 having gas and liquid permeability and having no electrode activity are provided on, for example, both surfaces of the cation exchange membrane 3 between these. The frames 1, 1' are tightened via gaskets 5. Anode and cathode bars 6, 7 are inserted into anode, cathode chambers 8, 9 from the lower parts of the frames 1, 1' and are connected electrically to the electrodes 2, 2' by means of connecting members 10. An aq. caustic alkali soln. and water are supplied respectively to the chambers 8, 9 from the hollow parts 11, 13 in the lower part, whereby the water is electrolyzed. The gases formed in the chambers 8, 9, unreacted electrolyte, H2 and aq. caustic alkali soln. are removed respectively from the upper hollow parts 12, 14 to the outside. |
