PURPOSE:To make the decrease in electrolytic voltage possible by disposing a cation exchange membrane having gas and liquid permeable porous layers having no electrode activity between an anode and a cathode, and heating the liquid to be supplied into an electrolytic cell through heat exchanging with the gas discharged from the electrodes and the liquid discharged from the electrolytic cell. CONSTITUTION:In an electrolytic cell which produces alkali hydroxide by supplying an aq. alkali chloride soln. into an anode side and water or an aq. alkali hydroxide soln. into a cathode side, a cation exchange membrane formed of gas and liquid permeable porous layers having no electrode activity on at least one surface is disposed between the anode and the cathode. The aq. alkali chloride soln. to be supplied into the electrolytic cell is preheated by the heat exchanging wherein it is brought into contact in counter current with the gaseous Cl2 or H2 generated from the electrodes discharged at 60-100 deg.C or the aq. caustic alkali soln. discharged from the electrolytic cell before it is supplied into said cell. |
