PURPOSE:To obtain hydrogen with low voltage and good efficiency by providing microruggedness and porous layers of org. materials of specific compsn. on the respective surfaces of an ion exchange membrane segmenting the anode and cathode of an electrolytic cell for electrolysis of water. CONSTITUTION:Microruggedness of average about 10<3>-10<15> pieces per cm<2> of the membrane surface of average about 0.01-50mu depth or height from the membrane surface is provided on one surface of an ion exchange membrane. The surface and sectional shapes of the ruggedness can be properly selected and the ruggedness is formed by press-sticking particle layers of iron or the like on the membrane surface under heating and burying part thereof into the membrane then removing the particle layers other than by a sand blasting method, a wire brushing method or the like. On the other hand, a porous layer consisting of modified polytetrafluoroethylene copolymerized with a modifier consisting of a fluorine-contg. monomer contg. acid type functional groups is provided on the other membrane surface. This modifier is, for example, CF2=CFO(CF2)3COOCH3. |
