PURPOSE:A compound, which is readily derived from a phenol derivative by bromination, is made to react with an acylaminobenzene derivative in the presence of an acid acceptor and a copper catalyst, then, when necessary, the product is hydrolyzed to produce the high-purity titled compound in low costs. CONSTITUTION:The reaction between a compound of formulaI(R1, R2 are methyl, ethyl; X is chlorine or bromine) such as 3-methyl-4-chloroanisol and another compound of formula II (R3 is methyl, ethyl, chlorine, trifluoromethyl; n is 0-2) such as acetanilide is conducted in the presence of an acid acceptor such as potassium carbonate or magnesium oxide and of a copper catalyst such as copper powder or cupric acetate to give an compoun of formula III such as N-acetyl-2-methyl-4-methoxydiphenylamine. USE:The compound of formula IV is an intermediate of a colorant of heat-sensitive or pressure-sensitive copying paper. The compound of formula III is a starting compound of the compound of formula IV. |
