A block according to the invention for constructing a retaining wall is characterised in that it comprises a front-wall part of rectangular shape, a rear retaining part, which extends perpendicularly to the rear from the front-wall part, and a joint-type connecting part which is formed in one piece at the rearwardly directed end of the rear retaining part. The block also has vertical elongate holes through which reinforcing bars run; such holes are located at least at the point at which the front-wall part and the rear retaining part merge into each other, and in the joint-type connecting part. When, in order to construct a retaining wall, the blocks are stacked one on top of the other in rows and earth for producing a ground surface is filled into the interspaces, each of which is delimited by the front-wall part, the rear retaining parts and the joint-like connecting part, the retaining wall produced in this way has, owing to the construction of its blocks, increased strength and stability with respect to earthquakes, vibrations or flooding.
