Cephalosporin oximes of formula (I) in syn isomer form, and their acid salts are new. In (I), B is R, Ra or Rb. R is CSR', COR', CR4R".CO2A', (II) or (CH2)n'R5; R' is 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, phenyl or (CH2)nNR2R3; n = 0-4; R2 and R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl or together complete piperidino, morpholino or phthalimido. A' = H or equiv. of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, Mg, NH4 or amine base, or an easily-cleaved ester gp.; R4 = phenyl, hydroxyethyl or CN; R" = H or 1-4C alkyl; n' = 1-4; R5 = 1-4C alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl, NR6R7, CN (if n' is not = 1), CSNH2, CONH2 (if n is not = 1), 4-methyl (sic), 4-amino-1,3-thiazol-2-yl, 1,2,3,4 tetrazol-5-yl, N3 or 2-4C acyl; R6 and R7 = H or 1-4C alkyl or together make phthalimido or 1-pyridinyl; Ra is (CH2)n'r5a where R5a = halo or SAr; Ar = phenyl or 5-6 membered aromatic heterocycle with 1-4 S, N or O atoms; Ar is opt. substd. by >=1 amino, NO2, 1-4C alkyl or CN. R6 is (CH2)n'R5b, where R5b = NR66R76; R66 + R76 complete an imidazolyl, morpholino or N-(1-4C alkyl) piperazine; R1 is Cl, ch3o, 1-5c alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkylthio, CH2SR12, acetoxymethyl, carbamoyloxyethyl or NHCOAlk; R12 = N-contg. heterocycle, 2-4C acyl, 2-oxo (3H)-thiazolin-4-yl carbonyl or 3-methyl-1,2-oxazol-5-ylcarbonyl; Alk = 1-jC alkyl; and A = H or an equiv. of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, Mg, NH4 or amine base or an easily-cleaved ester gp. (I) are antibacterials effective against Gram positive and negative species, esp. penicillin-resistant Staphylococci, coliforms, Klebsiella, Proteus and Salmonella. They can also be used to sterilise surgical instruments.
