Two containers (1, 2) arranged one above another are surrounded by a jacket (5) which acts a heat pipe and through which heat is transported from the lower, warmer medium (eg. waste water) to the upper colder medium (eg. make-up water). In order to heat the make-up water to the desired service water temperature, an additional heat source (15) is arranged in the upper region (14) of the upper container (1). The jacket (5) terminates below this region (14) of the additional heat source (15).
