A synthetic suede leather consists of a support, for example a woven, knitted or nonwoven fabric, which support is bonded on at least one side to a layer of a plastics material which contains hollow microspheres whose thin shell consists of a vinylidene chloride copolymer and whose hollow core contains a gas. At the surface of this layer the hollow microspheres are at least partially open to achieve the suede effect. To achieve a coloured appearance, the plastics material may contain a pigment in admixture. In the manufacture of such a synthetic suede leather, a liquid, foam-forming plastics material, which preferably contains a pigment, is admixed with compact particles consisting of vinylidene chloride copolymer and containing a blowing agent, and this plastics material is applied to at least one side of the support, or a support is impregnated with this plastics material. Then the plastics material is allowed to consolidate at a temperature between 85 DEG and 180 DEG C, heat being supplied, and the hollow microspheres form in situ. Finally the consolidated plastics material is mechanically treated, preferably buffed, at its upper surface for the purpose of opening the hollow microspheres.
