The invention relates to a tool for severing seat belts, which is to a large extent safe and if the need arises permits vehicle occupants to be rapidly freed. The tool is composed of a shaft (1) with a fork-like opening (2) in the front shaft part (3) and two cutters (5, 6) which are embedded in the front shaft part (3) and are arranged at an acute angle to one another. The actual cutting tool is preferably composed of a pair of lever shears (4) which is operated by a lever (7) slightly projecting out of the shaft (1). The tool is expediently fixed in the passenger compartment by holding magnets (11) embedded on the rear shaft part (10). <IMAGE>
