A roof-rack for cars is disclosed which has a cover and is used to protect the loaded material against unauthorised access and the action of weather. The roof-rack is composed of a dimensionally stable hood which is articulated to a substructure which takes the form of a basket which is open at the top. The hood is preferably pivotable about a horizontal axis and can be locked at the end facing away from the pivot axis. In one embodiment, the hood in the closed condition laterally covers the fastening devices of the substructure on the roof rails. In this embodiment, the front panel and the two side panels are essentially continuations of the adjoining body regions.
