Free-wheels are used to lock the rotary movement of rotating parts in one direction and release it in one direction. The transmission of a torque in one direction of rotation only is made possible in that the freely rotating rollers or balls are locked in one direction via spring elements. The flat springs are drawn by the rollers or balls themselves into the gap between the latter and the outer or inner race. The wedging springs may be designed as thin-walled leaf springs which are bent in the form of an S, as wedging plates which are flexibly connected to the housing or to one another, or as similar locking elements. It is particularly advantageous that free-wheels of this type then have bearing properties of their own, with the result that the assignment of a separate roller bearing or ball bearing is dispensed with. Furthermore, a free-wheel of this type maintains its mode of operation even if wear occurs, since the drive is compensated by the elasticity of the spring.
