<p>The specification describes a device for interrupting high voltage electrical currents. The device includes a stationary energized element and a movable energized element which is adapted to make contact with the stationary element in a first position. The device has motive means for storing and rapidly delivering rotational energy which has been stored therein. Input means are operable by movement thereof by an operator of the interrupting device for supplying rotational energy to the motive means for storing therein and for causing the motive means to rapidly deliver the rotational energy stored therein. The device further includes overdrive means which has its output connected to the movable element and its input connected to the motive means. The overdrive means is adapted to provide a greater amount of rotation at its output to the movable element than is received at its input from the motive means and is adapted to rapidly rotate the movable energized element independently of the rate of movement of the input means by the operator so that the arc plasma generated by the separation of the elements substantially traces the path of the movable energized element until the arc plasma is extinguished. csm/</p> |
