Air is drawn through the filter casing from inlet (2) to outlet (3) by fan (18). An easily demountable metal grid (4) removes the coarse particles before the air passes into a number of parallel tubes (11) that contain conventional electrostatic filters. The air then exits into a common chamber to equalize the pressure before the fan passes it into a similar chamber above the apex of a conical filter (19). This filter is made of activated charcoal, principally to remove any ozone produced by the electrostatic discharge. A portion of the outer casing near the fan is provided with sound absorbent material (37). A modification, where each tube (11) has its own, smaller, fan is considered as a means to reduce noise. A further design using a rectangular outer casing is described.
